We are laser focused on the value of energy data and analytics here at The Megawatt Hour. We have countless examples of customers that have more effectively managed their energy costs simply through improving their access to data and analytics.
There’s the MWh client located near Manhattan that used MWh software to make a future purchasing decision part way through their existing contract term. This customer would have paid 25% more if they had stayed with utility supply. These results are outstanding.
Or the School that has lowered costs and usage as a result of the transparency and trust MWh data and analytics provide. In addition to these stories, there are others who have identified operational problems, or billing errors, or others who have had the opportunity to validate energy efficiency investments thanks to data and analytics.

Utilities begin the process of modernizing their data and analytics
The publication Utility Dive recently ran a deep dive piece titled “The biggest numbers game in the power sector: Data analytics and the utility community of the future”. The piece describes recent utility innovations in data and analytics. These efforts are promising. As the article mentions:
Data analytics can ultimately lead to a decentralized network that allows peer-to-peer energy transactions in a connected community, energy sector analysts told Utility Dive. But utilities must first fully assimilate and integrate the data and its capabilities.
To this, we would say that these efforts are essential to the efficient operation of the utility industry. We would also say that a focus on improved data and analytics must extend to utility customers. We work with utility data on behalf of clients all the time. In our experience, utilities have a long way to go. It is essential that customers have ready access to as much data as possible. All of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the digital universe will be squandered if customers can access basic usage and cost data readily. We all need to do better on behalf of customers.
